Alternative rock (alt-rock) is a diverse rock genre that emerged from the 1980s indie underground, defined by its departure from mainstream rock's polished sound, often featuring distorted guitars, DIY ethics, and rebellious lyrics, exploding into the mainstream in the 1990s with grunge and Britpop, and encompasses many styles like emo, shoegaze, and indie rock. There will be some examples below.

The Drums - Money
The theme of lack of money, not being able to afford what you want, and frustration are likely based on the band members' real experiences early in their career, when financial difficulties were common.
Current Joys - A Different Age
It explores feelings of inadequacy and alienation in the modern world. How the author feels misunderstood and disconnected from the current era, striving for deeper connections and authentic self-expression despite living in a «city living in another era».
